A new study that was performed at the University of California has determined that secondhand marijuana smoking is deadlier than the smoking of conventional tobacco.

The study was made on rats that have been breathing traditional tobacco smoke and marijuana smoke for the same amount of time. The blood vessels of the subjects were checked before and after inhaling the smoke for one minute. After marijuana secondhand smoking the rats’ arteries performance was compromised for about an hour and a half, and the recovery from it was considerably slower than from secondhand conventional tobacco.
Although in 2014 a study proved that heart problems rarely occur in a short period after smoking marijuana, the risk is still five times bigger that for those who do not smoke marijuana at all. It is considered still a subtle risk compared with the risk of a heart attack during an exhausting workout session. Another study showed that the risk of dying is highly increased among people who already suffered a heart attack and who regularly smoke marijuana. All of these studies have been made on short periods of time and very few have been conducted on the inhaling of secondhand marijuana smoke. However, let us not mistake the lack of evidence that marijuana smoke is causing cardiovascular problems with proof that it is harmless.

Moreover, studies have proved that the inhaling of marijuana smoke can increase the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition that slows the development of hardening and narrowing the arteries. Also, the risk of cardiovascular or artery issues is increased by the consumption of marijuana.
For all of us to get a clearer picture of the risks of marijuana consumption or even secondhand smoke inhaling, more studies must be conducted.
