Vice-President Mike Pence opened himself up to wide criticism on Thursday when he called for ending Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, including from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
Thus far, the investigation has resulted in 23 indictments and three plea deals with three former Trump campaign officials. And Paul Manafort is currently on trial for conspiracy against the United States, bank fraud, and money laundering.
Despite these results, Pence argued during an interview on the TODAY show that the investigation should be closed simply because it has gone on for a year and that the administration has allegedly cooperated fully with Mueller:
“What I think is that it’s been about a year since this investigation began. Our administration has provided over a million documents, we’ve fully cooperated in it and in the interest of the country, I think it’s time to wrap it up. And I would very respectfully encourage the special counsel and his team to bring their work to completion.”
We should point out that Pence never complained about the length of the Benghazi investigation undertaken by Republicans even though it lasted four years. The investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails lasted two years, but neither President Donald Trump nor Vice President Pence complained about it. But both have the gall to complain about the length of Mueller’s investigation.
And let’s not forget there were ZERO indictments in the Benghazi and email investigations. There have been 23 in Mueller’s investigation so far.
Furthermore, Trump has repeatedly tried to undermine Mueller’s investigation and still has not testified in the investigation as he said he would. That’s far from “fully cooperating.”
Pence’s statement on the investigation really pissed off Schiff, who is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
As you may recall, the committee recently ended their investigation after Republicans decided to prematurely clear Trump and his campaign despite the evidence and the fact that the investigation was incomplete.
On Twitter, Schiff called Pence out for being a sycophant and slammed him for trying to interfere with Mueller’s work.
VP Pence has now brought his sycophancy to a whole new level. With questions concerning which senior transition officials were aware of Flynn’s secret talks w/ Russian Ambassador still unanswered and new revelations every day, investigation must continue without his interference. https://t.co/gXFdZVc15h

Pence’s insistence that Mueller wrap up the investigation makes one wonder what Pence has to hide. Clearly, he is eager for the probe to conclude. The more Trump and Pence fight to force the investigation into a premature end, the more suspicions they arouse.
Innocent people do not try to obstruct investigations. They welcome them because they have nothing to hide. Trump and Pence are doing the opposite of that.
Schiff has previously stated that the House Intelligence Committee has “damning” evidence that Trump colluded with Russia. If that’s the case, Mueller must have that evidence as well and that’s why Trump and Pence are pushing back so hard against the probe. Mueller is closing in and it’s only a matter of time.
