In a recent interview, Roy Moore who is now running for the congressional seat left empty by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Alabama said we should no longer consider Russia the “focus of evil” in modern times.
America the New ‘Focus of Evil.’
Moore made a case that the new focus of evil is America since it is promoting a lot of evil things such as same-sex marriage. Ironically, even though the Republican failed to win Trump’s endorsement in this race, he sounded an awful lot like him.
The first step of the special election will occur on Aug. 15th, when the initial primary is scheduled. The latest polls show that Moore is the favorite contender on the Republican side, having a six-point lead.
The Guardian took a trip to Alabama to learn what the local GOP’s opinion on Russia was. Part of the journalistic investigation included an interview with Moore. Reporter Paul Lewis asked him what Ronald Reagan may feel about the alleged Russian meddling with last year’s elections.
When Lewis noted that Reagan genuinely believed that Russia was “the focus of evil in the modern world,” Moore suggested one could say the same thing about the U.S. nowadays.
Putin Is Right
When asked why would he think that, the Republican replied that “we promote a lot of bad things” like same-sex marriage. The reporter underlined that this is the line of thought of Vladimir Putin too.
Well, then maybe Putin is right. Maybe he’s more akin to me than I know,
Russia is known for being extremely unwelcoming to the LGBTQ community. Gay men trying to hold Gay Pride Parades are arrested or assaulted in broad daylight. In Chechnya, they are killed.
Moore’s views are not unique, however. Earlier this year when Trump was reminded about the suppression of the press and political opponents in Russia, he responded that the U.S. is not so innocent.
