A White House official just leaked word that President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord. The official insisted on anonymity to discuss the decision before the official announcement. The source said that there might be “caveats in the language” that the president uses in announcing the withdrawal so that it would remain a possibility for the pullout not to be final.

If this is true, the USA would be one of three nations that did not sign the agreement. The President did promise to his fanatical followers that he would pull our of the deal and despite the requests from other world leaders, it seem the President may follow through.

The decision to withdraw would be a significant foreign policy break with nearly every other nation on earth. Two hundred countries agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change. During last week’s overseas trip, European leaders pressed Trump to keep the U.S. in the landmark agreement.

On Tuesday, the president met with a critical voice in advocating withdrawal from the accord, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt. On Wednesday, Trump will meet with Rex Tillerson, the Secretary of State, who has been a voice to remain in the agreement. There has been even further disagreement within the White House administration. Steve Bannon has continually challenged the president to keep his campaign promises and withdrawal. But Ivanka, the president’s daughter, and close advisor have urged Trump to look at the full picture of what pulling out of the accord would mean.

Trump has previously made it clear that he plans to keep his campaign promise to withdrawal, but it is unclear what the precise plan for pulling out is. If Trump makes good on his promises, it will dismantle what former President Obama called it “the best chance we have” to save the planet. “The Paris agreement establishes the enduring framework the world needs to solve the climate crisis,” Obama said, speaking from the White House. “It creates the mechanism, the architecture, for us to continually tackle this problem in an effective way.”

With people surrounding President Trump like Scott Pruitt and Bannon, we can only hope that Ivanka and Tillerson can persuade the President to do the right thing?
