“Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath?,” Trump rhetorically asked during a press conference about the “loyalty pledge” he allegedly asked from former FBI Director James Comey. Well, CNN found a video showing Trump asking a large crowd of supporters for loyalty.
This happened before the Florida primary election when the billionaire candidate asked supporters to raise their hands and “do a pledge” to him:
Trump said that he would never ask for a loyalty pledge during a joint press conference with President Klaus Iohannis of Romania in the Rose Garden Friday. After promising to back NATO’s mutual defense plan, Trump had to get back to the topic of Comey testimony as ABC’s correspondent Jon Karl wanted to know whether Comey’s assertion that the president had asked him to “let go” the Flynn investigation was true.
Trump Denies Asking a Pledge for Loyalty from Comey
Trump replied he didn’t say that, but he refused to say the former FBI chief has lied Congress about it. When Karl asked if the loyalty pledge was real, the president responded that even though “everybody” says there would have been nothing wrong with it, he didn’t say that either.
When Karl pushed further and asked Trump if he would deny that under oath too, Trump replied “100%”.
I’m not going to say, ‘I want you to pledge allegiance.’ Who would do that? Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath? […] It doesn’t make sense,”
The recently unearthed footage shows that he asked a whole crowd to “solemnly swear” that they would remain faithful to him no matter what happens or how they feel. Before demanding the mass pledge, he said, however, that he had never done it before.
