The instant you see the new Barbie wearing a hijab, you intuitively know that the Trump supporter’s heads will be exploding in 3…2…1. Yes, on Monday, Barbie announced the new doll based on Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, an American who wore her hijab while competing, a first in American Olympic history.
Ibtihaj Muhammad called the new doll a “childhood dream come true” on Twitter.
Thank you @Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the @Barbie #Shero family! I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true 😭💘 #shero pic.twitter.com/py7nbtb2KD

Ibtihaj talked about her childhood when she would sew little hijabs on her Babie dolls.
“Now Mattel is doing this for us. Today I’m proud to know that little girls who wear hijabs and just as powerfully, those who don’t, can play with Barbie, who chooses to wear a head scarf, ” said Ibtihaj at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit 2017.
Mattel introduced a line called Sheroes in 2015, modeled on famous women. The marketing slogan: “Barbie recognizes Sheroes –female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere.”
Another Olympian, gymnast Gabby Douglas, has her own doll as well. The following year, Mattel went on to introduce curvier petite dolls and a more diverse line of dolls with different skin tones, hairstyles, and body types. The trend continued into this year when new diverse Ken dolls were offered.

The doll sure is cute, but, as mentioned before, this product is sure to trigger the xenophobic and islamophobic people out there. Sure enough, we’ve found some outraged Trump supporters calling for a boycott of Barbie.
Witness the Tweet below from a woman who likens the doll to endorsing Sharia law:
This Twitter user can’t distinguish extremists in ISIS from an American Olympian:
And of course, Ann Coulter had to put her two tainted and predictable cents in:
A young man, whose profile reads, “Politically Conservative. Intolerant” want people to think this is indoctrination. For American Olympic athlete, Ibtihaj Muhammad, the choice is definitely hers.
It’s funny how conservatives seem to make a big deal out of the little things, like a Barbie in a hijab, while ignoring things like a president who likely colluded with America’s biggest adversary to win the 2016 election. In the proper perspective, it’s just a plastic figure representing our diverse American culture, a culture that strives to be inclusive, even when confronted with enormous fear, hate, and misunderstanding.
We applaud Mattel for including the new Barbie inspired by Ibtihaj Muhammad in their line of dolls.
