President Trump will continue courting moderate Democrats at a dinner on tax reform, Trump’s current priority, tonight. Republican senators will also attend the dinner, hosted by Trump and VP Mike Pence.
The guest list is expected to include Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Manchin, and Joe Donnelly, representing West Virginia, North Dakota, and Indiana. GOP Sens. Pat Toomey (Penn.), John Thune (S.D.), and Orrin Hatch (Utah) are also expected to attend.
Heitkamp, Manchin, and Donnelly are all up for reelection in 2018 in states that supported Trump in the 2016 election. All three declined to join party leaders in a letter outlining tax reform. All three supported Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch.
Last week, Trump and Heitkamp appeared together at a tax reform event in North Dakota where Trump called Heitkamp a “good woman.”
Despite GOP frustration, Trump continues his attempt at a bipartisan approach following the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare. Last week, Trump agreed with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi on a fiscal deal.
Democrat support could carry weight as the Republicans have a narrow majority margin in the Senate.
