Evidence Mounts Against Alleged Terrorist Ahmad Khan Rahami

Federal prosecutors are portraying the alleged terrorist Ahmad Khan Rahami as a jihadist who admired Osama bin Laden. Authorities believed Rahami was behind the bombings that took place over the weekend in New York and New Jersey.

The alleged terrorist had purchased bomb components on eBay. He then made a video with himself as he assembled the explosive devices and tested them out. Investigators also discovered the suspect’s journal. In this journal, Rahami speaks about how angry he is for the crimes the US is perpetrating in the Middle East.

Rahami came to the United States at the age of 7. In the journal, which he had with him when he was arrested, he wrote, “God willing, the sounds of bombs will be heard in the streets. Gun shots to your police. Death to your oppression”.

Up to this point, the White House was reluctant to call the bombings a terrorist attack. They needed to find more evidence that would point to this explanation. Earlier this week, when they made the accusations public, they finally started labelling the incidents a terrorist attack.

The alleged terrorist placed two bombs in New York and New Jersey respectively. On Saturday evening, Rahami place a bomb in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The explosion wounded 31 people. The other bomb in New Jersey didn’t injure anyone. Rahami is also suspected of planting a third bomb in Manhattan, and several explosive devices in Elizabeth station, in New Jersey. This third bomb, however, failed to explode. One of the devices in New Jersey exploded while the squad robot was working on diffusing it. Nobody suffered any injuries in these incidents.

The police captured Rahami after a violet shootout in Linden, New Jersey. The alleged terrorist received several gunshot wounds. At the hospital, medics declared he was in a stable, albeit critical condition.

Who Is the Alleged Terrorist?

Ahmad Khan Rahami was bori in Afghanistan, in 1988. He came to America in 1995, at the age of 7. His father had arrived prior to that, seeking asylum.

In 2011, Rahami became a naturalized citizen. During that same year, he married a woman from Pakistan.

Between 2010-2012, Rahami attended classes at Middlesex County College in Edison, New Jersey. He was majoring in criminal justice, but never graduated.

His wife, Asia Bibi Rahami came to the US in 2014. However, she left the country shortly before the attacks on Saturday. So far, she has been very willing to cooperate in the investigation.

Rahami made several visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan during these past years. His longest one took place, in Pakistan, took place between April 2012 and March 2013.

Because he had visited regions known for their Taliban activity, Rahami had to undergo a second screening process upon his return. Authorities say he passed the screenings without a problem each time. He stated that he had been visiting relatives in these countries.

While the motive for the bombings may be clear, so far the evidence against the alleged terrorist Ahmad Khan Rahami is only indirect. No matter how incriminating this information may seem, a thorough investigation needs to take place until it can be determined whether Rahami truly is behind these attacks.
