Retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath is the most recent example of a Democrat with a strong resume that plans to unseat Republicans in the 2018 midterms. With 89 combat missions, McGrath eyes one of the most challenging missions in her life: fighting Republican’s plan to strip millions of her fellow Kentuckians of critical health care.
McGrath Became Combat Pilot Against All Odds
The retired Marine Lt. Col.’s campaign recently unveiled an ad which introduces the new contender to Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. In the short clip, McGrath recounts the turning points in her life that led to her career as a combat pilot. With a 20-year career with the Marines, she recalls that her congressman once told her that women had no place in combat.
When I was thirteen, my Congressman told me I couldn’t fly in combat. He said Congress thought women ought to be protected and not allowed to serve in combat.
However, that didn’t stop her from becoming the first female Marine to fly an F-18 in combat. She now wants to fight against the congressional GOP and their plan to deny access to healthcare to so many Americans, especially in Kentucky.
A Surge of Democrats Running for the House
She is not the only Democrat to challenge Republican Congressman Andy Barr in the Bluegrass State, but unlike her fellow party members, her war chest is significantly smaller. So, she will first focus on fundraising.
What’s more, unseating Barr won’t be easy since he was re-elected last year by a twenty point margin. Recently, Barr also said that he would continue to push for health care reform even if some changes are not to everyone’s liking.
Barr’s seat was held by Democrat Ben Chandler when Democrats passed Obamacare. Chandler opposed Obamacare both in its House and Senate versions. In 2012, he was unseated by Barr.
