If the election of a racist, philandering former Reality TV star says anything, it’s that we are living in a bizarro universe. We can either retreat and regress as a nation under the corrupt and wannabe fascists president, or we can fight back and use all of our power to show that Trump does not represent the majority of America. Well, that’s just what one gay veteran did.
On Saturday, 62 percent of voters in Del Rio, Texas vigorously voted to elect gay Air Force veteran Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano as its mayor. At 35 years of age, Lozano is both the town’s youngest mayor and first openly gay official. He previously served as a security law enforcement officer in the Air Force eventually turning activist.
But here’s the real kick in the throat to socially backward and intolerant “Christians” like VP Mike Pence and Republicans in Congress: Lozano is not only a gay veteran, but he likes to wear high heels.
“I’m not going to bow down. I am who I am. Accept me or not,” new mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano said.
Although not renowned for its socially liberal politics, Texas is slowly becoming more democratic. Not only was Lozano’s being openly gay not an issue during the mayoral campaign in the city of about 41,000 people, but there wasn’t even a mumble of right-wing rage when he decided to don high heels to march in the city’s Veteran’s Day parade last year.
Lozano, brave and determined, says that he took inspiration from previous gays and drag queens who fought back against societal prejudice.
Stonewall happened because drag queens and a minority group stood up to animosity, and I had to go back in the closet [while in the Air Force] because of that same hatred, he told . I know what that was like, and it translates to today’s campaign. I’m not going to bow down. I am who I am. Accept me or not.
Lozano is but one of many veterans who either won or who are running for office, hoping to replace the plethora of cowardly chickenhawk Republicans who love to exploit them for political gain.
