Hypocritical evangelist Franklin Graham said during an interview this week that President Donald Trump’s extramarital affairs are “nobody’s business” and that attacking former President Bill Clinton for his immoral transgressions were a “mistake.”
Twenty years ago, conservatives crusades to oust Clinton from office because of his affairs. Evangelicals were up in arms and demanded he was impeached. And they have been attacking the Clintons ever since.
Graham was part of that “Christian” mob in 1998. He even wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal condemning Clinton’s behavior in which he argued that Clinton’s “private conduct does have public consequences.”
“Just look at how many have already been pulled under by the wake of the president’s sin: Mr. Clinton’s wife and daughter, Ms. Lewinsky, her parents, White House staff members, friends, and supporters, public officials and an unwitting American public,” Graham wrote, adding that “the God of the Bible says that what one does in private does matter.”
Graham even goes to argue that if Clinton is so willing to betray his family, he could do the same to the American people
Clinton, of course, is a Democrat. Trump is a Republican. And now that the shoe is on the other foot, Graham has all of sudden changed his tune. Now cheating on one’s spouse is just a private matter that doesn’t matter because Trump was elected president. Graham also wants us to believe that he has changed his mind about how conservatives attacked Clinton.
“These things happened many years ago – and there’s such bigger problems in front of us as a nation that we need to be dealing with than other things in his life a long time ago,” Graham told the Associated Press in an interview this week. “I think some of these things – that’s for him and his wife to deal with. I think when the country went after President Clinton – the Republicans – that was a great mistake that should never have happened. And I think this thing with Stormy Daniels and so forth is nobody’s business.”
This simply doesn’t pass the bullsh*t test. If former President Obama cheated on his wife with a porn star years before taking office and lied about it Republicans would have been screaming for impeachment and Graham would have led the charge.
But because Trump is a Republican who is doing the bidding of evangelicals, Graham is insisting that we all forget about what Trump has done.
“This stuff happened 12 years ago,” Graham continued. “This isn’t behavior that has taken place since he’s been president. These things happened long before he became president. That doesn’t make it right. I don’t defend those kinds of relationships he had. But the country knew the kind of person he was back then, and they still made the decision to make him the president of the United States.”

Trump may not be cheating on his wife right now, but he has certainly been telling a lot of lies and has taken many actions and said many things that should be horrifying evangelicals.
And Graham should face the fact that Trump’s extramarital affairs and lies have had public consequences. Evangelicals are now seen as the hypocrites some say they have been for years and they have lost most, if not all, of their credibility with many. Trump’s own credibility has been in the toilet since before he took office and has now sunk even deeper into the swamp he promised to drain.
Let’s not forget that Trump and conservatives used Bill Clinton’s affairs against Hillary during the 2016 Election even though she was the one who was cheated on.
Franklin Graham is an unabashed hypocrite who chose political power over religious morality many years ago.
The next time a Democrat is in the White House, evangelicals and Republicans should absolutely keep their mouths shut. Because if they dare criticize, they should be reminded that they sold their souls to Trump and there is no going back.
