When President Donald Trump announced that the United States would no longer honor its commitment to the Iran nuclear deal, the world waited for Iran’s reaction. As it turns out, the Iranian government is acting more responsible on the international stage than Trump’s regime.
The deal was signed in 2015 and is one of former President Barack Obama’s signature foreign policy achievements. Not only does the deal prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, but it’s also a framework we could have relied upon in the future.
But America will no longer be part of that future as Trump withdrew from it on Tuesday.
“It is clear to me that we cannot prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement. The Iran deal is defective at its core.”
That’s not what our allies think.
France, Germany, and the United Kingdom “remain committed” to the deal and said so in a joint statement released in response to Trump’s announcement. They also noted that:
“Our governments remain committed to ensuring the agreement is upheld, and will work with all the remaining parties to the deal to ensure this remains the case including through ensuring the continuing economic benefits to the Iranian people that are linked to the agreement.”
And Iran agrees.
Not only is Iran equally committed to remaining in the deal, but Trump’s withdrawal also gave the Iranian government an opening to humiliate the United States and damage our reputation.
According to Reuters:
“President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday Iran would remain committed to the deal without Washington despite Trump’s decision to withdraw from it. The pact was designed to deny Tehran the ability to build nuclear weapons.
‘If we achieve the deal’s goals in cooperation with other members of the deal, it will remain in place. … By exiting the deal, America has officially undermined its commitment to an international treaty,’ Rouhani said in a televised speech.
‘I have ordered the foreign ministry to negotiate with the European countries, China and Russia in coming weeks. If at the end of this short period we conclude that we can fully benefit from the JCPOA with the cooperation of all countries, the deal would remain,’ he said.”
Iran’s decision foils Trump’s aim at killing the deal entirely. And should the United States launch a military attack on Iran, such action would anger the remaining signatories of the agreement, including Russia and China.
The United States would likely face backlash internationally.
By withdrawing from the deal, Trump opened America up to ridicule and harmed any future negotiations involving our nation. Countries around the world now know that the United States can’t be trusted to keep commitments, whether it be a treaty or trade deal or any other agreement.
This perfectly demonstrates that Trump is unfit for office and that he is the most dangerous threat to America’s place in the world. Our reputation is in tatters, and Iran just showed that they have more credibility than we do.
