Convicted Criminal Joe Arpaio Vows To Use Senate Seat To Keep Pushing Obama Birtherism

According to a report by The Hill, convicted criminal Joe Arpaio, says that if elected to the Senate, he will continue to attack the legitimacy of former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

The report quotes him as saying:

“I don’t talk about it anymore, until I become a U.S. senator…So I’m kind of dropping that right now,” Arpaio told the Western Conservative Conference in Phoenix. But I’m going to tell you something. One hundred percent we proved that’s a fake document. One hundred.”

Firstly, the claims that President Obama’s birth certificate is fake are lies. Second, Arpaio’s continued attacks on Obama do not sit well with President Donald Trump’s admission in September 2016, where he plainly stated that Barack Obama was born in the United States.

President Trump pardoned Arpaio late last year for criminal contempt of court after he refused to abide by a judge’s ruling to stop unconstitutional racial profiling. The pardon has been described as an “affront to judiciary,” especially given candidate Donald Trump’s insistence on heavily favoring “the rule of law.”

Trump went so far as to mimic former president Richard Nixon in saying:

“I am the law and order candidate.”

Arpaio, by his own admission, has been criticized by The Justice Department, Amnesty International, and the American Civil Liberties Union for his mistreatment of his prisoners. He often bragged about making prisoners eat baloney sandwiches so rotten the meat had turned green.

Arpaio is currently running for the Senate seat held by retiring Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) Given Flake’s willingness to challenge the president, he represents a much more extreme voice to have in the Senate. The same racism that motivated him to dehumanize and profile his prisoners can be found in his insistence that the first black president isn’t really American.

Joe Arpaio’s birtherism was unacceptable then and it is unacceptable now, but it doesn’t mean that he won’t get the Republican nomination.
