Watch: Newt Gingrich Makes Outrageous Civil War Comparison Claim

Newt Gingrich doesn’t know how to stop putting his foot in his mouth. On Wednesday he decided to make a crude and ill-informed comparison of liberals to “slave newspapers.”

Liberals Are Like Slaves to Lincoln

Gingrich spoke on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight and tried to quote a Civil War professor he knows. This said professor told him Lincoln’s inaugural address was criticized the same way Trump faces criticism.

“He has made the case that the parallels between Trump’s inaugural and Lincoln’s inaugural and the reactions to them are amazing,” Gingrich said. “If you go and you look at how South Carolina’s slave newspapers responded to Lincoln and then you look at how the left responded to Trump, they are almost verbatim parallels,” he added.

The thing is Gingrich; we think your made-up professor is fake news. Although there were black newspapers before the Emancipation Proclamation, they weren’t formally recognized until days after the signing.  These newspapers never bashed Lincoln because they knew Lincoln would free them. The only thing Lincoln would have been criticized for was his stance on sending all black Americans back to Africa because he felt they could not live in peace among white people. In essence, he thought he was protecting everyone by telling them they needed to go back once they were freed.

Gingrich believes the gap between the left and right is getting wider and compromise is out of the question. He decided to improperly add that the left will be the cause of another Civil War because they are “going crazier and crazier.” Captain Obvious also said, “one side or the other wins.” No, we just thought there would be a draw, and everything would go back to being hunky dory. Gingrich has been a staunch supporter of Trump but lately has criticized the president. He warned Trump to quit “stepping on himself” in the wake of the Charlottesville attack.
