The White House Press Corps was not happy about what Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders forced them to do on Monday.
For the reporters to ask questions, Huckabee Sanders stipulated that they all must tell her what they are thankful for, sucking up what was left of the enthusiasm out of the room.
Giving thanks is a religious exercise, and as we all know, the government cannot force anyone to participate. But that’s what Huckabee Sanders did, and the reporters really had no choice if they were going to do their jobs.
Huckabee Sanders started by saying:
“This will be our last press briefing before the Thanksgiving holiday in this room. So I want to share a few things that I’m thankful for and I think it would be nice for you guys to do so, as well, before asking your questions. … I’m clearly thankful for all of you in the room.”
She continued and went on to list her family and friends, the troops, the police, and her religious beliefs.
Yeah, it was cringe-worthy. But the distinguished reporters in the room soon turned the tables.
After giving the floor to CNN reporter April Ryan, the fireworks began.
“I’m thankful to be able to talk to you and question you. I hope you felt the passion of my thankfulness.”
Other reporters said they were “thankful for the First Amendment,” clearly a shot at Donald Trump’s war against the press and his repeated efforts to stifle the Constitution.
After all, Trump has attacked them as “fake news” for over a year now while demanding that they write puff-propaganda pieces about him rather than report the facts.
Huckabee Sanders pretended to agree with the reporters but treats the press with nearly as much disdain as Trump does.
Drawing a stinging burn from Ryan, Huckabee Sanders said:
“I think we all are.”
“Yeah, but we are part of it.”

The reporters who make up the White House House Press Corps are there to work, not sing and dance at the Press Secretary’s whim. Their job is to ask questions. Her job is to answer them. Instead, she wasted their time and the American people’s time who expected answers and information.
Is she going to force them to take turns praying next time?
This was awkward. It should never have happened. And it smacked of theocracy. The Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves.
