Pokémon Go is all the rage at the moment and it doesn’t look like it’s going to die down anytime soon.

Instead, some fans have found evidence while they were poking around in the game’s coding that one of the rarest first-generation Pokémon might soon appear in the augmented reality app.

If you have been trying to catch ‘em all on Pokémon Go for the past few days, you may have already noticed that certain characters are awfully rare. Even though the game’s list of available Pokémon – called the Pokédex – seems to end at number 150 with Mewtwo, any fan can tell you that the original wave of creatures does not end there.

However, if you didn’t know, Mew is the 151st Pokémon, one that was initially available only through special download events that were held for the first Pokémon games on Game Boy.

Similar promotions have made the creature available only a few times over the years, which led to Mew gaining its status among the rarest characters. Even though it looks like Mew will keep that rarity, it appears possible that Pokémon Go will feature it in the future.

Pokémon Mew

Some Reddit users have searched through the complete coding behind Niantic’s game, revealing that there are references to Mew. In the main Pokémon RPG titles, this particular character is referred to as “Mythic,” with an elemental type of Psychic.

All of these features together have caused Mew to have some of the highest stats in the entire game. However, Mew is not like the other Pokémon players can encounter.

Both Mew and Mewtwo (the genetically altered version of Mew) lack a value for “base capture rate,” which means you cannot catch them in the “wild.”

This status is also applicable to Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres, the ‘Legendary Birds’ and the popular mascots of the three teams in Pokémon Go – Team Instinct, Team Mystic, and Team Valor. These characters are most likely to be introduced in the new game at a later stage, probably through special events.

But while this news is currently only a rumor, more details are expected to be revealed about Mew’s potential sighting at the Pokémon Go panel hosted by Niantic founder John Hanke in the upcoming San Diego Comic Con.
