Mueller must be getting closer and closer to nailing Trump. He has the Republicans running scared with Rep. Ron DeSantis’ (R-Fla.) latest move to push an amendment to curtail the investigation.

Amendment Halts Mueller’s Probe

DeSantis has put forward a provision that would halt funding for Mueller’s probe into the Russian investigation. If the amendment passes, it would halt funding in 6 months. It would also prohibit Mueller from investigating any matter that occurred before June 2015 which is when Trump started his presidential campaign. The amendment comes as one of hundreds filed to the government spending package the House is supposed to consider next week after the August recess. The provision is not a guaranteed vote on the House floor but the House Rules Committee has a wide leeway to discard amendments it considers totally way out of line.

DeSantis stated that appointing special counsel Robert Mueller “didn’t identify a crime to be investigated and practically invites a fishing expedition.” Umm…what? Obviously, he was appointed because something was wrong. People don’t just get appointed all willy-nilly. Oh, wait, Trump does that on a daily basis.

“Congress should use its spending power to clarify the scope and limit the duration of this investigation,” he explained. Deputy Attorney General Rod “Rosenstein has said that the DOJ doesn’t conduct fishing expeditions; the corollary to this admonition should be that Congress will not fund a fishing expedition.”

House Democrats Fight For Mueller

Several House Democrats are pushing for amendments to protect the probe. Rep. Nita Lowey of New York proposed a measure to prohibit the Justice Department from obstructing Mueller’s work. House Speaker Paul Ryan has voiced support for Mueller (shocker there) after reports said trump thought about firing Mueller. The thing is if a president is being investigated for crimes of treason, fraud, and God knows what else he’s done, that president should not have the power to fire that person.

“I think the best advice is to let Robert Mueller do his job,” Ryan said in June.
