Special Counsel Robert Mueller is making President Trump nervous, anxious, and more unhinged than usual.

For the past few days, Trump has been firing off one tweet after another directed at Mueller’s ongoing investigation in Russian interference in the 2016 election. Here’s one from Sunday:

Even though his attorneys have reportedly told Trump to not comment on the investigation, it seems he cannot help himself, and his endless social media postings only serve to draw more attention to the matter.

Appearing on CNN Tuesday morning, former Pennsylvania GOP Senator Rick Santorum said the president is not doing himself any favors with his frantic outbursts on Twitter:

“I think, overall, he’s making it worse. Had he been more aggressive on pursuing the national security aspects in the Russian involvement in our election, that would have taken the high ground. Again, you can still take that position and say there was no collusion.”

Santorum then added that Trump’s unwillingness to let the investigation play out while he goes about the business of his office make him look guilty:

“Calling for the end of the Muller investigation… again, I understand the frustration. But the president harping about it… as Trey Gowdy said, ‘If you’re innocent, act innocent.’ And right now he’s looking like [he wants] this over because he’s got something to hide.”

It’s been said before but it’s worth repeating: If Trump is truly innocent, he’d welcome the Mueller probe as a way to prove that he had nothing to do with Russia. That would add legitimacy to his presidency.

Instead, Trump rants and raves like a maniac, suggesting that our worst fears about him are indeed justified.
