Schumer Challenges Trump on National TV

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Last week, Trump gave in to pressure and agreed to testify under oath about his meetings and other interactions with former FBI director James Comey. In a recent interview, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) challenged the president to quit game playing and honor his promise.

Trump Should Testify about the Tapes, Comey

Schumer launched an open invitation to Trump to come and testify before Congress on CBS’ Face The Nation. The lawmaker wants to hear Trump say under oath that he didn’t demand loyalty from Comey and that he did not force the ousted FBI chief to drop the federal investigation into his disgraced national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Schumer pointed out that the Trump administration is surrounded by a “cloud” of uncertainty due to the ongoing Russia probe, so Trump could finally get the chance of clearing it up.

The Senate Democrat is tired of “game playing” and said Trump should be honest and clear the cloud. Schumer thinks he can do that in two ways. If the tapes of his meetings with Comey exist, he should release them immediately; if the tapes don’t exist, Trump should let everybody know that after putting his hand on a Bible.

Trump Risks to Fall into a ‘Perjury Trap’

The New York Senator believes that Trump unveiled he had the tapes as a threat or taunt directed at Comey.

And of course, he said he would testify. So I’m inviting him to come testify, and we could work that out,

Schumer said.

Experts, however, think that if he decides to testify, the president would most likely fall into a “perjury trap.” Nevertheless, Trump has promised other things publicly and failed to fulfill them. So, it is highly unlikely he will voluntarily put himself at risk, at least not at this moment.
