The Gauntlet’s Been Thrown: Article of Trump’s Impeachment Issued

President Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and VP Mike Pence

Last night we found out some very happy news and can only hope something will become of it. The first attempt at impeaching Trump is underway; the gauntlet has been thrown.

Two Senators Issued An Impeachment Article

Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman (Calif.) issued the article on Wednesday that accuses Trump of obstructing justice during the Russian investigation. Nothing we haven’t heard before. Sherman argues that Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey amounts to obstructing justice and “high crimes and misdemeanors” amid the Russian probes.

“In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office,”

The article states.

This is the first attempt by a lawmaker at formally impeaching the president since it’s come down to if Democrats want to pursue the matter at this time. Most think it’s politically unwise with everything going on with healthcare, the Russian investigation, etc.

A House majority vote is required to impeach a president, and the Republicans have a 46-seat advantage. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders slammed the move saying, “I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst.” Well, you’re a Trump supporter. Obviously, you are going to have to defend him. We don’t think it’s ridiculous on the other hand, better to remove him now than wait until things get even worse.

Currently, Sherman only has one supporter for the article, Rep. Al Green of Texas. Green previously called for Trump’s impeachment on the House floor.

Democratic Leaders Iffy on the Move

Many Democratic leaders aren’t eager to push impeachment at the moment, saying it could hurt the party. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joseph Crowley and Nancy Pelosi said that they should focus on the issues at hand such as the repeal and replace of the ACA. House Republicans can easily reject the article if Sherman forces a vote, but it also puts all members on record regarding Trump’s impeachment. Many other Democrats think it’s premature to talk about impeachment, especially when we’ll then have to deal with VP Pence. As much as we all hate Trump, he’s stupid, and Pence will make things even worse for America.

Only three previous presidents have gone through the impeachment process. Both Andrew Jackson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999 were acquitted and remained in office. Nixon was also never formerly impeached since he resigned in 1974 before he could be prosecuted.
