Trump’s Latest Scheme To Derail The Mueller Probe Will Infuriate You

President Trump, according to friends and aides, is an ebullient mood these days.

With a growing Russia investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and increasing calls by some in Congress to pass legislation which would prevent the president from firing Mueller, it might seem odd that Trump is so sanguine.

Preparing to deliver his first State of the Union address Tuesday evening, Trump is now looking to battle against the Mueller probe on multiple fronts, one of which could well wind up short-circuiting Mueller’s schedule while also bringing Trump even closer to impeachment.

NBC News is reporting that Trump has a two-track strategy for dealing with the Muller probe:

“One is an un-Trumpian passivity and trust. He keeps telling some in his circle that Mueller — any day now — will tell him he is off the hook for any charge of collusion with the Russians or obstruction of justice.”

The second one, however, is downright diabolical and reeks of something a Third World dictator might attempt:

“The Trump strategy is to discredit the investigation and the FBI without officially removing the leadership. Trump is even talking to friends about the possibility of asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to consider prosecuting Mueller and his team.

“Here’s how it would work: ‘We’re sorry, Mr. Mueller, you won’t be able to run the federal grand jury today because he has to go testify to another federal grand jury,’ said one Trump adviser.”

However, it’s unclear exactly what crimes Mueller and his investigators would be charged with. Also, it’s not a certainty that Sessions — who angered Trump by recusing himself from overseeing the Russia investigation — would be willing to do something that might further tarnish his already stained legacy. And there’s no assurance that any federal judge would even allow such charges to go forward if filed.

Donald Trump is desperate and delusional. He still thinks he can maneuver or threaten his way out of the jeopardy his own actions have placed him in. Instead, he may well discover that his every move against Mueller will only bring him closer to being removed from office.
