A very interesting thing happened on Monday night on the Capitol steps. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and Georgia Rep. John Lewis discuss the healthcare view in front of a Facebook live audience. Three and a half hours later there was a cheering crowd of over 100 people and thousands on Facebook watching. By the end of the video Booker says, “this is a moral moment…this is not a political moment.”
Democratic Senators Join In
Over the course of the talk, many Democratic Senators came to speak at this sit-out and listen to what Booker had to say. The sit-out comes almost a year the day after House Democrats staged a sit-in on the House floor to protest gun control and the Republicans inaction on the subject. Among those who joined in were Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), Senators Jeff Merkely (OR) and Kristen Gillibrand (NY), as well as Bobby Casey (PA) and Chris Murphy (CT). At this point it’s literally impossible to be too Anti-Trump and anti-Republicans for the Democrats. A majority of the Senators at the sit-out last night are mentioned as possible 2020 candidates. As of this morning, over 875,000 viewers watched Booker’s live feed and that’s not including anyone who may have been watching another person’s live stream in the crowd. If you’d like to watch part of, or even all 3 and a half hours of Booker’s feed, you can check it out below.
Health care is a human right. So this week we face a defining moment: we are perhaps days away from a vote on a devastating health repeal bill in the United States Senate that threatens the health and financial security of millions of Americans. We must fight harder for the American people who will suffer, who will get sicker, who will lose loved ones if the Senate Republican plan goes through. Because right now, the fate of millions of Americans and future generations are at stake in this fight – a fight Americans cannot afford to lose.Congressman John Lewis said it well: “Affordable health care is the birthright of every American. At stake are not just the details of policy but the character of our country.”So John Lewis and I are going to sit down on the Capitol steps for a while to protest Senate Republican’s efforts to repeal health care and give voice to millions of Americans who believe that affordable health care is a human right.Watch, share & join us.
