On Monday Attorney General Jeff Sessions made an announcement during the press briefing at the White House this afternoon. The Attorney General stated that cities known as “sanctuary cities” are being placed on notice and DOJ federal grants will be withheld. You can watch the Attorney Generals comments below:
“Unfortunately some states and cities have adopted policies designed to frustrate the enforcement of immigration laws. Such policies cannot continue. They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the streets. Moreover, the Department of Justice will require that jurisdictions seeking or applying for Department of Justice grants to certify compliance with [relevant laws] as a condition of receiving those awards. I strongly urge our nation’s states and cities and counties to consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws and to rethink these policies. Such policies make their cities and state less safe — public safety, as well as national security, are at stake — and put them at risk of losing federal dollars. “We have simply got to end this policy.”
ABC News reports that the DOJ is budgeted to release $4.1 billion in grants to communities and municipalities. Sessions mentioned three grant programs: the COPS grant which helps municipalities afford to put police on the street, the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program which awards municipalities money to pay for jail costs and the Byrne grants which help municipalities pay to hire prosecutors.
All of these grants are federal funds designed to help municipalities afford the high costs of public safety and may cripple many cities that take federal money to offset costs. Large cities like New York and Los Angeles use these funds. However, New York said that regardless of federal money being cut they will continue their policy of sanctuary.
As a result of this new policy, the racist agenda of the Trump administration is going put us ALL at risk to go after peaceful immigrants.
